Let me say it like this...Dispaya may have been a "great scourge" in her day...but she was fighting for the other side. So...to say she was great implies she was great at killing blood elves and orcs. It's not an accomplishment she ever brags about. Be careful what you imply by saying a Death Knight was once "great." It may backfire.
There is an old orcish expression....
"Show me, don't tell me."
If you want to be great then do it through your rp.

Being cast off as an insignificant piece of trash by the Lich King is not what I would consider "Great". No Death Knight is seen as "Great" in the Lich Kings eyes, he is selfish and cruel and does only what he needs to meet his own ends...at least thats my impression of him.
Your greatness needs to be earned from those you associate with...they are the true judges.
In my opinion no Death Knight can be RP'd, based on the events that are to come, as a "Great" Death Knight or "Greatest of all death knights".
Keep the events of the coming expansion in mind, they tell their own story.
It is m understanding that the player controlled death knights will be ones that broke free for the most part, not cast offs

Regardless of what happens to the death knights...they are cast off or they break free...the situation is the same.

I highly suggest anyone rolling a Death Knight actually plays through the starting quests before they lay out their back story in stone.
I would also like to mention that Daichallar is not going to be particularly trusting of Death Knights, so they will have to be especially careful while embedding themselves in the Tribe. Remember, IC consequences for IC actions. Daichallar will "banish" Death Knights for any apparent threat to the Tribe as a whole.
Just a couple things to think about while folks formulate their back story.

What about characters that I may have potentially heard might be converting characters into Death Knights...eg. Using the same name as a character we already know? I could be wrong but I know I have heard it a couple of times going around from random people....thoughts on this concept?

As long as it fits into the actual lore it should be fine. It is not unthinkable that some tribe have been captured. Upon escaping it might be only too reasonable that they would return to what they knew in their previous incarnation.

As posted before...based on the DK opening...it is more that they are cast off....not so much that they break free. So be thinking along the lines that the knight is betrayed by Arthas and cast off and has to rebuild him/herself...not so much that they are so strong they up and decide to leave. Dai is right...you may want to play through the opening before setting anything in stone.
The fact that one is actually weak and outcast may be the best stepping stone to coming to a tribe like Ironsong. Once again...if someone is SO strong...why would they need us?

So, I'm considering "converting" Kraala (my warlock) into a DK. I certainly want to keep it within contextual believability and the established lore. The very basic concept I have is that she'd feel a pull towards Northrend; she's always been the Black Sheep of the family, and a little more open to less-than-savory means and methods. With the character concept I've had for her as a warlock, it's not outside the realm of her concept to be tempted by something of this nature, especially as it would allow her to *really* show Lhuurssa up. "Who's the strongest now!?" sort of thing.
I certainly plan on playing through the tutorials/beginning quests for the DK character; I'm curious as to y'all's thoughts.

Roleplaying a "fall" is certainly within reason - I have alluded to the fact in my piece of very short fiction posted a few weeks ago that I may be doing so with my paladin Serce - and grounding it in the storyline once we see it in play will make it all the more believable.

I was just wondering do you think Blood Elven Death Knights would have ever felt their races addiction to magic once the sunwell was destroyed? Because I would think most of them would have been made after Arthas stormed Silvermoon and from there on they would have always held a powerfull magic item.(Their runeblades)
