WoW Web Stats
#31
I had a post here and deleted it. I actually had to do some work over the weekend and today, so things keep changing too fast for me to keep up.

Elyana, you know that I take your suggestions seriously.

I will continue to post the webstats because we are interested in improvement. I think we have improved as a raid and I can point to several individuals who have markedly improved over the past few months. Again, this is one data point, so let's look at the next one and go from there.

Finally, I am going to ask all of your indulgence because I am an old FART and feel compelled to say something. Remember that I am a tenured Full professor and that curriculum fights are as nasty as they come. In academia, we fight so hard because the stakes are so small.

I have had many, many opportunities in my life to be critical of someone else. I have learned from hard experience that gentle prodding is more effective than yelling and getting upset. It also does not matter if you are absolutely right, because the other person is absolutely right also... Extremes tend to harden attitudes, and except in World of Warcraft, there are very few absolutes. I know the satisfaction to say exactly what you feel, and the remorse or consequences that follow.

I have also been criticized more than I care to admit. Actually, it is my job (Peer Review anyone?) It has never been easy for me to take, but have learned to take what I need out of it to improve. Usually, it was something that I knew anyway, and somehow that made it easier to take and adapt to my own uses.

Though I am not a religious man, I do believe in sin (how can you not?), and that pride or arrogance is first among them.

The only thing that I would ask is that you continue to be civil and respectful of each other. This is the principle that has allowed IST to last for as long as it has (that, and you have to admit that our forums are always riveting). So far this has not been a problem, and the discussion has been honest and in the open. I commend you.

Eh, enough preaching,

We old farts <3 old farts, preacher Jaba!

We are doing peer reviews of each other essays in my english class right now. I seriously hate doing it because I don't want feelings to get hurt or something that wasn't intended to be upsetting taken that way. I also don't want to see what my classmates think about my work! After we did reviews the first time and I saw the comments and suggestions about my paper (which weren't many because it was, of course, perfection Big Grin ) it made me write an amazing final paper to turn in. I got an A and only a small comment about something that could have been changed. The rest was thanking me for having in the correct format and praise for an excellent paper.

Really, I'm shutting up soon. The point of the WWS stats was never to single anyone out or make them feel bad. It's a TOOL to help. Advice from people may sometimes come out sounding as if you are being preached to, but honestly I never saw that in this thread. I saw knowledgeable people offering sincere help, advice and suggestions.

Definitely shutting up now. Sorry Kosath!

I have been doing some research on why different damage meters display such different results. All I can really come up with is that it is an errorful process, and that statistics would seem to apply. To that end, I will ask a couple of other range members to collect combat log information during the Friday raid, and will attempt to merge them in the wow web stats.

Some sources of error are distance from the person collecting data (supposedly fixed in 2.4, but I have my doubts), errors in parsing the log, weird forms of damage, and pets.

Just keep in mind that they are not 100% accurate.

Yeah, Aarloouoou's pet "Sreng" caused some bad anomalies in Karazhan at times. For the others, things usually seem to be within a percentage point or two.

Aarloouoous's DPS was well over 12k, in Kara gear. I was very ammused seeing Sreng's at 125, pretty much just Meathooks damage.

They did seem to have fixed it for the next run though.
