Hello Tribe,

We are changing the organization of the guild bank and its deposit policies in order to make the bank more useful to our members and to reduce clutter in the new expansion.

With the "Stay Classy" achievement, the guild now has eight bank tabs. In Warlords, these tabs will be:

Tab 1: Officer tab
Tab 2: Deposit
Tab 3: WoD Armory (for gear)
Tab 4: WoD Enhancements (enchants, leather patches, belt buckles, etc.)
Tab 5: WoD Crafting Materials (leather, ore, cloth, herbs, uncut gems, inks, etc.)
Tab 6: WoD Consumables (food and potions)
Tab 7: Pets & Cosmetic (battle pets, toys that don't go in the toy box, appearance-altering items, vanity stuff, unusual BoEs for transmog etc.)
Tab 8: Old World Items

The Deposit tab will be the only tab that accepts deposits. It will function as a holding area for new donations. Tabs 3-8 will be withdraw-only. Evaluating, triaging, and moving items from the Deposit tab to the other tabs will be the responsibility of the officers.

The ultimate goal of this system is to have a well-organized bank that contains lots of useful items for our members.

These changes will go into effect before Thursday, so if there is something there you would use, please take it!

The officers have been discussing a re-working of our ranks for several years, and on 7/31/13 I implemented the changes that we'd agreed upon. Our goals are to increase our guild's security through authenticators, and to reflect the game as we play it now. Here are the changes:

Authenticators for all ranks above Grunt

Blizzard has been badly hacked in the past, and it is clear that even if an individual does everything right, and keeps their computer scrupulously clean, they and the guild are still at risk of being hacked due to weakness in Blizzard's security. For this reason, we are implementing a policy of authenticators for everyone above Grunt.

I split the Grunt rank into two ranks: Scout (authenticatored) and Grunt (non-authenticatored). Grunt will be our only non-authenticatored member rank. These ranks are equal in the eyes of the guild; they differ only in guild bank access. Scouts can withdraw up to 10 items per tab per day, while Grunts will be able to withdraw only 1 item per tab per day.

We have promoted all Grunts with authenticators to the rank of Scout. In two weeks, on August 14, 2013 I will change the rank of Grunt to 1 item per tab per day. This gives current Grunts a two-week window to withdraw what they need and get an authenticator before their bank access is reduced. After the change has been made, any Grunt who acquires an authenticator can simply contact an officer for a promotion to Scout. Grunts may also ask members with bank access to withdraw items from the bank for them.

The Advisor, Blooded, and Champion ranks now also require an authenticator. All members of these ranks without authenticators have been demoted to Grunt. As it turned out, most of our members already have authenticators, and those that did not were almost entirely inactive players. Any former Advisor or Blooded who returns to the game and acquires an authenticator is welcome to return to their former rank.

Redesign of our mid-level ranks

Farseer and Blademaster have been combined into a single rank, called Farseer.

These two ranks were originally supposed to provide color, but we weren't using it. These have therefore been combined into a single rank.

The Iron-singer and Raider ranks have been removed.

The Iron-singer and Raider ranks served the purpose of recognizing people with grass-roots leadership ability who organized and led either RP events or raids, respectively. We will handle emergent leaders differently, by recognizing reliable leaders of any type of activity (not just RP or raids, but also 5-mans, achievement runs, challenge modes, social gatherings, classic raids etc.) with a promotion to Advisor. The explicit division of these two ranks didn't represent the way we are playing the game now, and the ranks had become stagnant.

This will free up the middle ranks for more short-lived and creative uses!

(or "The Ironsong High-Wire Balance: Reconciling Nasty Characters With the Tribe's Need for Peace, Love, and Understanding")

Hi all!

In the interest of fostering creativity and maintaining guild harmony, I've written the following article. Much of what I'm going to say is reiteration of the Code of Conduct, but perhaps this new spin will be useful.

Ironsong is a roleplay guild. When I decided to form this guild, my primary goal was to create something that enhanced peoples' enjoyment of the game. While I feel that we do this successfully, we can always be doing better.

Evil is a captivating topic, and it is a tangible quantity in WoW, with such factions as the Legion and the Scourge, and of course plain-old run-of-the-mill nastiness. Evil is an important element in a lot of fantasy settings, and while the Ironsong Tribe has emerged as a predominantly good-aligned group, we do see our fair share of evil characters.

This is a Good Thing. I actively encourage all of you to be roleplaying your characters to the hilt. Explore, play, that's what this is for! But in the interest of Tribal harmony, let's take some time for a few considerations.... (btw, this all applies for the less evil, but more antisocial/awkward/unusual characters out there too. Adapt as necessary!)

1. Responsibility to your Tribemates: As members of the Ironsong Tribe, you have a responsibility to each other to make their game more enjoyable. Or at least, to not detract from their enjoyment. You may greatly enjoy playing your character in such a way that makes him/her out to be a scumbag, but remember that others see this stuff too. I have previously stated,

When you read a book,
you're reading a story about one or two or more characters, usually.
These characters are the central focus of the story, and though they
may meet other characters, typically the main characters remain the
focus of the story. This is a pleasant and useful device in fiction
and storytelling, but it doesn't work in real life, and it becomes a
bit clumsy when applied to World of Warcraft. Each of our characters
are central to their own stories... and everyone else's character is
central to theirs. Nobody else loves your character as much as you
do.

I was referring to different issues then, but this is still relevant. What I mean is that it can be very easy to get caught up in telling your own story and forget that others may be affected by the choices you make.

2. Know when enough is enough. I've seen interactions that have made me cringe. Antagonizing other tribe members through constant harrassment and insult is not good roleplay, it's annoying. It can also run the risk of creating hurt feelings OOC, which is not acceptable RP under any circumstances. Your character may be known for her biting, sarcastic wit... does every interaction need to be a case of one-upmanship? Does it really matter if they beat you in a verbal sparring session? What are the consequences for your guildmates? Samuel Clemens said "It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt."

3. Develop a realistic concept. This is something that each and every one of you should have anyway. As roleplayers, you need to know your character inside and out. If your character is rude, evil, or just a little snarky, ask yourself why. The why doesn't need to be dramatic, it doesn't have to include being beaten up by the Alliance as a child. It can be simple, but let's make it three-dimensional. Let your character grow, develop, and change over time. Be a character, not a charicature.

4. When in doubt, back off. If you're not sure where to go with a potentially volatile RP interaction, try to bring it to a close. Some players make these interactions work well, and some really struggle with bringing them to a neat and effective finish.

5. Strive to entertain your tribemates MORE than you are entertaining yourself. Look at Damoxian. Everyone loves Damoxian, everyone knows who he is.

He is the single most effective example of a well-played nasty character I've ever seen. While he's got a smart reply for stupid questions, nobody doubts his loyalty to the Tribe or questions his integrity OOC. Don't carbon-copy him, because that's lame, but watch how he does it.
In ascending order, the Ironsong Order of Precedence is as follows:

Peon: This rank is awarded to those who have successfully petitioned for membership, but have not yet completed their trial period. Peons are not considered full members of the Tribe, though this seldom impacts the way in which they are treated by the Tribe.

Grunt: After successfully completing the period of trial, new members are given the rank of Grunt. Grunts are full members of the Tribe who serve the Horde well and bring distinction to the Tribe by constantly striving to embody the ideals of Ironsong. In limited-space events, Grunts are given preference over Peons during the invite process.

Blooded: Some Grunts go above and beyond, serving the tribe with distinction, skill, and above all, consistency. The rank of Blooded is awarded to those that demonstrate their dedication to the Tribe by participating in Tribe events with great regularity. The Blooded are those that have been members for a long time, and are well-known to their Tribemates. The Blooded also must demonstrate skill in battle.

Iron-Singer: Those who choose to enhance their tribemates' in-game experience by running roleplay events can be awarded the title of Iron-Singer. Our Iron-Singers must demonstrate a significant degree of skill and talent at roleplaying, and encourage the character development of other tribe members. Iron-Singers also must demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the lore of Azeroth. Raiders and Iron-Singers hold the same degree of prestige; the fact that Raider appears higher in the ranks is just an artifact of the built-in rank system.

Raider: Raiders are those who serve the Tribe by running instances, raids, PvP sessions, and the like, for their Tribemates. Previous Raiders have earned the rank by hosting attacks on Zul'gurub, the Barons of Silithus, Shadowfang Keep, and action on the field in Alterac Valley, Arathi Basin, and Warsong Gulch. Raiders must demonstrate leadership skills, tactical understanding, and the ability to make their raids a regular event. Raiders and Iron-Singers hold the same degree of prestige; the fact that Raider appears higher in the ranks is just an artifact of the built-in rank system.

Champion: The coveted post of Champion is occupied by only one character (and sometimes their alts) at a time. The Champion is nominated at the discretion of the Tribe's leader for some particularly great feat. The Champion serves a vital function by bringing a fresh voice to the Officer Chat channel, and some of our past Champions have gone on to become Officers themselves.

Advisor: This rank is a sub-officer position that serves a dual purpose. First, the alts of guild leaders and officers hold this rank. In addition to this, some former Champions are made Advisors, because the council of officers felt that they benefited from the Champion's wisdom in the Officer Chat channel.

Blademaster/Farseer: These are the officers of the Tribe. They have the ability to promote, demote, invite, and remove people from the Tribe. Most of the officers at the time of this writing were founding members of the Tribe, though a few have been promoted from the ranks.

Tribe Leader: At the time of this writing, the rank of Tribe Leader has been held by two individuals, and went by different names respectively. The current Tribe Leader is Sreng, and his official title is Warlord. The other leader, who held the title for several months time before returning the title to Sreng, was Shillatae, and her official title was Witch Doctor.

For those who may not be aware our policy on mains is that no main character is removed from the Tribe unless they have been inactive for a full year.
I'd like to take a moment to clarify the proper use of the tribe's guildchat channel.
Guildchat is for communicating with your tribemates in an in-character manner. Periodic OOC commentary is acceptible if used in moderation -

Kretol Wrote:Please keep in mind that we officers do not mind brief/occasional OOC remarks in guildchat.
Any and all prolonged OOC conversations should be kept in the IronsongOOC channel or in tells. On that note, PvP discussion should be kept to the Battlesong channel, unless it's concerning something major (ie, "Warchief Thrall is under attack! Any available Tribemates please come to assist in his defense!")

Reduced OOC and even more in-character discussion and comments in guildchat will increase our immersive Warcraft experience substantially!

I'd specifically like to address the issue of abbreviations and emoticons. I'd really like to see them stop. The Code of Conduct addresses this issue, but perhaps it is time for me to be more direct about it.

Emoticons, smileys, or whatever else you wish to call them, are not appropriate for IC guildchat. If your character wishes to express something non-verbally, please type it out. Shortcuts and lowest-common-denominator efforts at communication undermine the roleplay atmosphere that we try to foster within Ironsong.

Unless specifically appropriate, I'd like to see abbreviations and shortenings of proper names cease as well. UD Strat, Ony, MC, BWL, SM, Rags... this really gets under my skin. The reason we know these names in their abbreviated format is because they are referred to as such by players of a game.... but OUR CHARACTERS ARE NOT PLAYERS IN A GAME. These places and things are very real to them, and unless you have a really good in-character reason for communicating this way, don't.

Please do your best to abide by these recommendations and encourage others to do so as well. Consider this statement a clarification of points Four and Five of the Code of Conduct.
The General Chat Channel should only be used for finding Storylines (SLs), finding Party Groups, and various other discussions pertaining to the Base Storyline (BSL), game-related topics, and continuity.

The General Chat Channel should NOT be used for any "Off-topic," Non-Storyline, or non game-related discussions.

Examples of appropriate conversation in the General Chat Channel:
"Would anyone like to join a Rogue Specific SL?"
"What happened to the Well of Eternity?"
Examples of inappropriate conversation in the General Chat Channel:
Absolutely no out of character (OOC) or non-fantasy related dialogue should take place in the /Say, /Yell, or Party chat channels.
How to report rule breakers!
You must first ask the rulebreaker to stop. Be polite about it, sometimes people just don't know. If the person chooses to continue to break the server rules, you may file a GM ticket.

Filing the GM ticket
Select "Verbal Harassment"

Type the name of the offender, the time it occured, the time you asked them to stop, and then quote the offending text.

Example
At 3:45 PM server time, the player-character Johhnyleet said in /say "Star Wars is better than Star Trek!" At 3:40 PM I reminded him of the server rules, but he continued.
---
Reporting in Mass
You can use the following technique to report multiple offenders of the General Chat channel guidelines.

First, ask the offenders to stop in the apropriete channel. If the rulebreaking continues, create a verbal harassment GM ticket as before.

Include the time you asked people to stop, the name of the channel, and then list all of the names of the people who chose to continue to break the rules. In cases of mass offense, it is not neccissary to quote all of the text of all of the offenders, but you can give a summary to the GM what the chat was about.

Example
At 4:45 PM in the General Chat of Stormwind a lot of off topic chat occured about Chuck Norris. I reminded people of the server rules. The following players continued to break the rules and talk off topic.

Johhnyleet, Superdude, Sandlol, Clarkkent, Obione,

You can then edit your ticket to include any offenders who continue to talk off topic in General Chat.
---
Reporting Names
Select Verbal Harassment

Type in the suspected name that is in violation with a brief discription.

Example
There is a player character with the name "Spiderman", I believe this violates the naming rules of the server.

Language Violations
The profanity filter is not an excuse for players to use foul language. If you witness a player using foul language in /say, /party, /yell, or any offcial game channels you can report them.

Include the name of the offender, the time of the offense, and quote the UNCUT text of the language. (quote exactly what was said, it helps GMs find it easier in the logs)

Example
At 7:20 PM in /say the player-character Samson said F*** you. I believe this violates the language rules of the server.
---
Once you are used to filing tickets, it becomes quite easy and takes very little time to do.

If you care about your server, and your fellow players enjoyment then make the effort. GMs DO enforce the rules, but tickets have to be filed. Take pride in your server, and your game.

You should not have to change your playstyle because of other's ignorance and rudeness. Enjoy your game.
Absolutely no out of character (OOC) or non-fantasy related dialogue should take place in the /Say, /Yell, or Party chat channels.
---
How to report rule breakers!

Ironsong Tribe Code of Conduct:

Why are we even doing this? We're doing this for the same reason we do everything that we (Ironsong) do: to make a good thing even better. As of right now, we are recognized as one of the best Horde guilds on Silver Hand. We are highly respected by our peers, and we hold events that are second to none. We grow by a couple of new members a week, at least, and this shows no sign of abating. Our weekly moots have attracted several other people with no intent on joining us, simply because we are that much fun. But as we grow, we run the risk of losing that cohesion. We will continue to grow, and we will continue to add new minds and new talents to our pool of heroes. We must remain unified by the cohesive vision that is Ironsong, and we will continue to be the excellent, successful, and above all, enjoyable group that we are now.

1. Be respectful. At all times. This is not optional. Show respect to your Tribemates, and to your fellow players, regardless of their faction or affiliation. We are all playing this game to enjoy it, and being rude or disrespectful to another player does not enhance anyone's enjoyment. If it enhances your own enjoyment, you are probably in the wrong guild. Being respectful is easy enough if you think about it. Even players that you dislike or seem unable to get along with can be treated with respect. When all else fails, the IGNORE filter is in place for a reason.

2. No cursing or vulgarity in guildchat. Try to keep everything reasonably PG-rated.

3. Maturity. We have many young members, and that's not the kind of maturity I'm talking about. Many of our younger members have already displayed a great deal more maturity than I had at their age. Specifically, maturity means the ability to deal with issues in a rational, reasonable, adult manner. It means being able to have the clarity of vision to be critical and honest with oneself, and to act based on the greater good rather than the personal good. It means being able to rise above pettiness, and to recognize that some conflicts are simply not worth getting into. A mature player knows better than to get involved in a confrontation with someone who is griefing them or engaging in some other irritating behavior. Members of the Ironsong Tribe are able to put their pride aside and respond appropriately.

4. Role-playing. All members of the tribe are expected to be familiar with the history of Azeroth. While some of us take this to a level bordering on the encyclopedic, a working familiarity with basic timelines will suffice. In addition to this, all players are expected to have a character concept that makes sense within the context of Azerothian history. This concept should be readily communicable through the player's in-character words and actions, and players are expected to remain in character a majority of the time. Guildchat should be in character (IC) as much as possible, but out of character (OOC) chat is permitted as long as it is clearly defined by double parenthesis ((as such)).

5. Keyboard skills. Ironsong Tribe members should have a high degree of competence in typing. We are a Roleplay-based guild, and as such we need to have high standards of personal expression. Capitalization, punctuation, and spelling all count. Nobody's perfect, but everyone is capable of improving. Emoticons are not an acceptible substitute for a well-posed emote. Please try to type out words, such as "you" rather than "u" and "thanks" rather than "thx".

6. Knowing when to quit. Azeroth is a tough, nasty place, and a lot of our characters are tough, nasty people. This is fine, and can make for some really good roleplay. But let's make sure that people understand the difference between in-character and out-of-character interactions. This is why use of parentheses on OOC stuff is so important. You are not your character. Sreng and Dayv are not the same person, though they may be similar in many ways (my tusks are bigger). Make sure that a player understands that you are roleplaying something potentially negative, and avoid that kind of roleplay with people you don't know well. Be prepared to explain yourself (OOC /tells are a great way to do that). Essentially, your right to roleplay your character stops as soon as it negatively impacts someone else.

7. Humility. Here's something to think about. When you read a book, you're reading a story about one or two or more characters, usually. These characters are the central focus of the story, and though they may meet other characters, typically the main characters remain the focus of the story. This is a pleasant and useful device in fiction and storytelling, but it doesn't work in real life, and it becomes a bit clumsy when applied to World of Warcraft. Each of our characters are central to their own stories... and everyone else's character is central to theirs. Nobody else loves your character as much as you do. When coming up with a story for your character, remember this. Other people may not get involved. Other people may not care. Other people may not comply. Part of being a mature player is recognizing when your character isn't supposed to be the center of attention. Sometimes other players' characters need to shine, and it is your honor and privelege to stand aside and give them room in the spotlight. Heck, play along. We're Horde... what happens if we end up coming across some plucky young Alliance heroes who end up defeating us? You know what? Let them have their victory. Let them have triumphed over the Savage Horde monster! Find a way to fit into THEIR story now and then.

8. Recruitment. New applicants will be invited to the guild after an informal interview with an officer. They will receive a trial period, during which they will hold the rank of Peon. During this trial period they are expected to sign the Code of Conduct and submit an application to the forum. Typically this period is no more than a month, but it may be extended if the Farseers, Blademasters, or Warlord decide that more time is needed. If after that time the applicant is deemed to be a good fit for the Tribe (and vice-versa) they will be promoted to Grunt and welcomed as a full member of the Tribe.

9. Invariably, out of character conflicts will arise between guildmates. Rifts within a guild can have very damaging long-term consequences, and while you may feel you have every right to be angry with someone for all eternity, that conflict can hurt many of your guildmates if it is not resolved in some way. I have seen this range from petty verbal jabs to the refusal to heal or ressurect someone during a raid.

If you have a dispute with a guildmate that is negatively affecting you in any way, discuss it with an officer. This should not be seen as "telling on" someone. I have seen people who would rather leave the guild over one person who had been rude to them than discuss it with an officer. Their refusal to name the person just left that individual in the guild to hurt someone else in the future. It is important to the health of the guild as a whole that these things be brought to light.

How it is handled will vary by the situation, but will likely result in a discussion between those involved and one or more officers in a separate channel. Guildchat is not the place to air out your personal grievances. Generally, disagreements in MMORPG's are the result of a breakdown in communication, and it is our hope that a discussion will bring some clarity and resolution to those involved.

Finally, always remember the following when you feel you have been wronged by a guildmate: Do not assume the worst of other people's intentions. Mistakes are far more common than maliciousness.
