I am wondering if there is any benefit to picking up Heroic keys for the various dungeons? Not sure what our long term plans are for raids and such so was curious if there would be value in having these.

For one thing, it means you can go with those who are making runs to Heroic instances. And on the other side if you actually manage to get through the dungeons, the bosses drop better loot. That's about the extent of it.

Not to mention that several heroic runs are REQUIRED!!!!!!!!!! for Hyjal attunement!

Yeah, and about .01% of the people who play WoW will get to that before everyone goes to some other MMORPG.
