Vashu is DONE with his song!

Hey, Ironsingers! I don't know whether you've heard, but World of Warcraft's having an Original Song Competition, with songs inspired by Starcratf, Warcraft. or Diablo. I've decided to give it a shot. I'll be writing a song about the Zerg from Starcraft. I'll keep you posted as I keep writing it, and if I could get some constructive criticism as I go along, it'd be great Big Grin

I'm about 12 measures in so far, I'll post as soon as I get a substantial part of it up on the internet.

EDIT- Latest version here

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://media.putfile.com/SpawningGroundsWIPv2">http://media.putfile.com/SpawningGroundsWIPv2</a><!-- m -->

Added percussion during the first part, added melody during second part, got started on the guitar solo.

EDITED EDIT!

Reworked guitar solo, got started on the next melody. Questions, comments?

EDITED EDITTY EDIT EDIT!

Final version! There's still enough time to make revisions, so tell me what you think!

As a dabbler in music writing, for piano, I applaud you!

This is absolutely wonderful! I know that you can do it, Vashu! I will cheer you through every verse!

Zerglings are sweet little things, anyway.

Alright! I'm a little over a minute in so far. The song's called Spawning Grounds for now, if you've got a better idea for it, lemme know.

Comments? Critique?

Also, if anyone knows where I can find Starcraft sound effects on the internet, it'd be great.

*claps excitedly* I like!
At about 1:06 it feels like it should get some sort of bass/drum element. I'm not sure what kind of 'feel' you're going for in the finished product, but I really like what you have so far. Based on the intro, it feels like the total length of the song will be about 3:15 to 3:30. Just my take on it.....can't wait for the rest!

For the beginning part, I wanted to make it sound very busy, like a beehive. I added some more percussion to achieve that effect. The next part, with the low synth sound, is a bridge to the next bit. I added a short melody and a bassline to go with it, but I'm not that happy with the bassline.

After that, it's gonna take a more sinister turn, with a guitar solo and stuff, and when that's done, it's gonna progressively fade out until you can only hear the heartbeat.

I'll have an updated version on Putfile later today.

Ah, very cool to meet a songwriter. I have been too lazy to get Finalé on my comp lately 'cause a WoW...I also saw that competition thing. I'll get the disc from my pa tonight and I'll have to work on an entry myself. Although everything I write somehow turns into speed metal despite what I INTEND to write, I will still try to make a song like the old school VG stuff like in Mega Man and stuff.

I don't quite understand why they say, like, "make it about something". It doesn't have to resemble the music from the Blizz games, does it? I hope not. I'm not gonna do that! Eric does not sell out, man!

Alright, I look forward to hearing your song too, Urlacher! I have some trouble with speed metal, myself, as you can tell from the guitar solo. I specialize in techno, because it's the easiest >.>

It doesn't have to resemble anything from the Blizzard games. It just has to make the listener think of whatever it's inspired by. For example, despite the fact that the Protoss have a classical soundtrack, you could probably write a trance song about them.

Nice work on the solo Smile

Hm. Well, I just got Finalé working again. I must say, that trying to write using a program that's 6 years newer than what I'm used to, having not composed anything in over a year, and attempting a new genre makes for a difficult task...

I'll probably have to rework, like, the ENTIRE song at least twice. As it stands....not happy with the sophomoric level of intricacy. I might even dump most of it and just keep one or two things and put them in a new piece. Eh..melody has a couple good bars...the solo will probably be good...hmm....stuff around it doesn't sound like Mega Man or Contra...

Oi vey. And it's only about a minute and a half long, with huge amounts of repetition WITHOUT any variation. Guh. I hope I make the deadline...

Well, as soon as you get a good chunk of it on the internet, let us know. If you buckle down to it, I'm sure you can get it done by Tuesday. I've just been busy with homework and the like.

Good luck! Big Grin

By "Tuesday" do you mean "Tuesday the 25th"? When's the deadline?

Finished and submitted. About 9 minutes before the deadline. UGH! I'll edit this post with the song when I get back from work.

Edit: Oops...make that, 9 minutes and ONE DAY. I guess I thought by 12 PST Tuesday, they meant midnight Monday. Whatever. It could have used more work, but perhaps it's better I just leave it be. Could've turned in to one of those things where I'd be like, "No! Not good enough! AGH!" forever and stuff. Anyway, I put it up at:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://media.putfile.com/Number_of_theBaal">http://media.putfile.com/Number_of_theBaal</a><!-- m -->

Or it should be, anyway. This site doesn't actually work for me. I just hit "view source" and pick out the embed source code, copy that, and paste it into the URL bar.

So, yeah. Just like NES, eh? With a stupidly over-the-top solo *laugh*. It's out of control. I have no chance at winning for not being more normal or whatever. *shrug* Just had some fun. Maybe Vashu has a chance. GL, dude! Big Grin

I submitted mine last night, but for some reason it's not showing up on the FilePlanet submission list at

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.fileplanet.com/filelist.aspx?s=102435&v=0">http://www.fileplanet.com/filelist.aspx?s=102435&v=0</a><!-- m -->

...for some reason. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hopefully nothing went wrong.

Wow, Urlacher, I really like those arpeggios around 0.45 Big Grin It does sound an awful lot like an oldschool boss fight from the NES. Your song is quite a bit longer than mine, especially considering that I worked on mine for over 2 weeks >.>

I like it! May the best man win!

EDIT- I also thought I'd share this with you.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://protoss1.ytmnd.com/">http://protoss1.ytmnd.com/</a><!-- m -->

I didn't make it, but it's awesome anyway.

EDIT AGAIN- My song made it up onto FilePlanet, but using an (admittedly very rudimentary) style of deduction things don't look too good for my song. My song has only been downloaded once, along with about half of the new submissions. It can be assumed that the ones with more than 1 download have been listened to by the judges more than once, which means they've probably made it into a higher bracket. Oh well.

*crosses fingers*
