Non-WoW tech help

Prior to departing on her trip, my wife was browsing a site, and inadvertently clicked on something she shouldn't have. She's tried running her anti-virus software (AVG) as well as her anti-spyware software (Ad-Aware). Neither has found anything amiss, yet she keeps getting pop-ups. I know there are sites you can get scans done for such malware, and I'm looking for suggestions from those of you "in the know."

Ad-Aware is generally pretty good about catching those sorts of things, but you can give HouseCall by TrendMicro a shot:

Spy-Bot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware both catch different things, so I generally run them both.

Unfortunately, they do not always handle malware designed to circumvent them. If every time you are running Ad-Aware it is actually finding something that you remove, only to have it come back- then what she clicked on was a particular kind of malware whose sole purpose is to download other malware (which are actually the source of the popups). But when it isn't downloading that malware, it is dormant and doesn't get picked up by such scanners.

Do me a favor and download and run Spy-Bot S&D over at http://www.safer-networking.org/.

Go ahead and remove anything it finds, but write down their names and put them here.

I'll send my wife a link to this thread, since it's on her laptop (at home), which is about 5,000 miles (give or take) that way <-----------

Well, as it turns out, when she got home and updated AVG and Ad-Aware, they finally found the mailware and virus. I guess it took a few weeks for both programs to get info on the "bad" files. So, her laptop is all better now.
