Mods for Raiding and Everyday use

Just wondering if the RCSLs or anyone else could share some of the addons they use that would be beneficial to have?

Oh gosh, Cloud, there's TONS. Van and I have been in talks about bringing back a Kolem'esque type of mod thread that's chalk full of info about all the addons we use along with a .zip which'll be updated regularly and free for people to steal.. However we both use hundreds of 'em (mods) so it might be awhile. :>

Off the top of my head... (I've included links for some, my time is currently strecthed and I can't grab 'em all.. Doing a Google search for them should do the trick).

- Omen (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wowace.com/wiki/Omen">http://www.wowace.com/wiki/Omen</a><!-- m -->)
- A damage meter (SW Stats, Recount, Damagemeters)
- X-Perl (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/3416">http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/3416</a><!-- m -->)
- Cartographer (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wowace.com/wiki/Cartographer">http://www.wowace.com/wiki/Cartographer</a><!-- m -->)
- BigWigs/Deadly Boss Mods
- Fubar and it's very, very informative plugins (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wowace.com/wiki/FuBar">http://www.wowace.com/wiki/FuBar</a><!-- m -->)
- Atlas and Atlasloot (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.atlasmod.com">http://www.atlasmod.com</a><!-- m -->)
- Itemrack/Outfitter
- Scrolling Combat Text (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/111/">http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/111/</a><!-- m --> -- I still perfer it over Blizzard's)
- Ora2 (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wowace.com/wiki/ORA2">http://www.wowace.com/wiki/ORA2</a><!-- m -->)
- Some kind of gear compare mod to put value on potential upgrades.. I use EquipCompare and RatingBuster.

+ 349875 others! I could go on here for ages and likely forgot a few of the important ones.

One suggestion- if there's a choice between an Ace mod or a Curse mod, GO WITH ACE. Auto updating Ace addons with their WoWAceApdater (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wowace.com/wiki/WowAceUpdater">http://www.wowace.com/wiki/WowAceUpdater</a><!-- m -->) is a huge time saver.. Plus Ace as a whole seems to update everything more often and I've yet to run into a single issue with it's site and entities. If anyone has viable Ace addons to replace the Curse.com one's I still use above, please let me know! The ability to one day be able to autoupdate ALL of my addons with the click of a button = win.

I'm planning on addressing this for the healy priests soon-like, but I'll make mention of a few raiding addons that everyone in a raid should have.

Omen
Your basic threat meter - this is an addon that everyone should have in order to (obviously) monitor their threat in relation to the tank's. This is especially vital for DPS, but it can be life-saving for healers as well.

BigWigs, Deadly Boss Mods
Using either BigWigs or DMB is very, very, very helpful for any boss encounter. The addons inform you of cooldowns on bosses' abilities, when a boss is casting certain spells, when you're approaching phase transitions, certain effects on you to which you must react immediately, along with many other types of warnings and bits of dynamic information.

Raiding Assistance mod, such as oRA2 or CTRaidAssist.
These give you tank windows, extra targeting features, buff/debuff support, and a myriad of other useful abilities for raid support. Like a wonderbra for 25!

Unit Frames, such as X-Perl, or ag_UnitFrames, and Raid Frames such as sRaidFrames, X-Perl, or Grid.
More important for decursing classes, tanks, and healers, but very useful for everyone, as the default frames are horrible. These allow you to keep a much easier watch over health, mana, buffs, and debuffs, and can be configured to take up much less space and look so much nicer than the default ones.

A Bar mod, such as Bartender3.
This allows for customization of your bars sizes, shapes, and locations, as well as giving the ability to keybind and hide them all if you so wish. Using keybindings is much faster than mouse clicking once you are used to it, so this speeds your reaction time a great deal. Also serves to free up a lot of space on your screen, giving you a much better idea of what is going on.

Decursive
Useful for druids, priests, mages, paladins, and shaman especially, displayes and allows for very easy cleansing of defuffs on your group/raid. If you would rather not use a Decursive mod, be sure to configure your raid unit frames to highlight entities with a debuff you can cure, or at the very least show debuffs you can cure.

Scrolling Combat Text and Scrolling Combat Damage
These give you a much better visual of the damage and healing (as well as the type and source of same) that you are administering and receiving. I recommend using the “Split Profile” setting to keep it very clean.

A damage meter, such as SW Stats or Recount
Allows for showing damage done, dps, healing done, damage taken, and tracking any number of useful things.

A gear-switching addon, such as ClosetGnome or ItemRack
Especially useful for druids, paladins, and warriors, but wonderful for anyone with different sets of gear (healing, damage, tanking, resists, RP, etc.). Will instantly switch your gear to the set you select (if you're in combat, it will just switch weapons, idols, etc., and queue the rest for swapping when you're out of combat again). Wonderful, wonderful.

I'm sure I'll think of more, but yar. Also, what Sound said about Ace addons. *nods*

I use nearly everything both folks above suggested. It really cannot be stressed enough how important Omen (or another threat-watch mod) is, as well as having Deadly Boss Mods for raiding. If you do not have DBM (or something working as efficiently), then you are likely to be a LIABILITY in many later raid encounters, unless you're already extremely familiar with them. Many of the harder raid encounters have a ton of things going on, and failure to react appropriately could hurt you and the raid as a whole. You can get by without something like DBM for Kara/Gruul, but honestly, I'd recommend using it right from the start, so that you're used to it by the time you get to tougher stuff. For some fight's in Kara, it's just really, really useful (Netherspite and Nightbane in particular, Curator too).

Other mods that I use all the time:

AdvancedTradeSkillWindow - This lets you queue up crafting, and will take into account materials you've got. So if you've got a bunch of copper bars, it'll let you know what you can make if you turn those bars into copper bolts, and then use the bolts to make something, etc.

Cast Time - Quick simple mod that adds a numerical value to the cast bar. Excellent for micro-managing abilities.

Clique - This is a click-casting mod. You can set up any spell/ability/macro to run off a simple mouse click, adding other keystrokes to the click for different abilities. This lets me instantly do things like taunt, cleanse, heal, bubble, etc. If this mod ever breaks, my brain won't be far behind.

Enhancer - Shows your WF/SS cooldown and totem timers. Very handy for enhancement shaman.

FruityLoots - Moves loot under your mouse cursor, making it quick and easy to click through and loot things. Simple, but really nice :p

OneBag/OneBank/OneRing - Makes all your bags appear as one contiguous unit, and lets you check your bank from anywhere. Break = Brain melt.

PallyPower - If you are a paladin, go download this now. Just go. It lets you set up blessings so you can cast them with one click per class, and better, lets a raid assistant set up buffs for all paladins at once. This removes the 'what buffs should I use?' junk at the start of each raid.

Quartz - This shows your GCD, casting bars for lots of things, and several other useful bits that escape me at the moment. Very worthwhile.

RedRange - If your other mods don't already do this, grab it. It shades all abilities that are unusable on your current target due to range limitations red.

Sphere - Lets you set up a 'sphere' with 8 buff slots around it (drag and drop abilities onto them), can show threat/health/mana/xp/rep as well. Very very handy.

Totemus - The must-have mod for shamans, imo. Has a similar sphere interface to sphere, but each totem type opens onto a menu with all your other totems of that element with a click. Fantastic for swapping totems between fights, and makes it really easy to quickly cast them all. Also provides totem timers.

X-Perl is nice if you enjoy the customization, but a warning: it'll consume a fair bit of time learning everything. I only utilize maybe...20% of what i could be with that mod. But it's nice because you can pick and choose what bits of it you want to use.

I was recently introduced to BankItems. What's this? Well, if you, like me, have way too many alts, guilded or not -- a simple slash command "/bi" brings up a bank inventory menu that will show you what you have in your characters' banks, bags, mailboxes, and even guild banks. All you have to do is log each character on and check each of these items once with each. After that you can check anything from one character, and it stays updated.

The most FABULOUS aspect of BankItems however, is the search function. Type in the name of any items (in the BI search interface) and the addon will search all your bags/banks/mail/guild bank on all your characters for your search string. Results are as close to instant as you can get.

Looking for motes of mana? I did this the other day -- took 15s to bring up the mod, go to the search, type it in, and find that i had motes on three different characters. Sure i still had to switch to each to get them, but i knew where they were.

GET IT.

A lot of folks like X-Perl. It generally has "everything" you would need, including raid frames. ag_UnitFrames is an Ace mod, very lightweight by comparison to X-Perl, but much harder to set up properly. If you want the customization of ag with the same sort of functionality as X-Perl, I recommend Pitbull. Its based on ag_UnitFrames but its configuration is much more straightforward. I swapped from X-Perl a few months ago and am never going back. Smile

I suggest the WoWAce updater, I actually pretty much refuse to use anything that isn't on there. So nice to update everything with just one click.

Agreed. Wowace is the way to go. There's only a few addons i have to go hunt down once in a while to update. Everything else is done in under a minute.

What Dai and Grey said.

One click and *poof!* mods updated. No searching around for the most current version of this or that.

The ONLY one I still use that isn't on the WoWAce Updater is ItemRack. And that's because it's full of too much awesomeness not to use it.

Thought this might be important info for all the WoW-Ace users;

Files and WowAceUpdater

files.wowace.com and WAU and their popularity has come as a surprise to us all. As it currently stands files.wowace.com pushes out an incredible amount of addon updates. In an average month we're talking about more than thirty terabytes of data! In a busy month clearing sixty is no problem, and I don't even want to talk about what happens on major patch days. While this has indeed been very amazing, it has been a mixed blessing. The ads on the files homepage and inside of WAU have been an attempt to offset the costs. They have failed.

Unfortunately, these cold realities have forced me to make some hard decisions in relation to these features. files.wowace.com will be discontinued, in its place we'll be using the same syndication framework as CurseForge.

In addition, WAU will, for the time being, be discontinued as well as it won't be receiving any new content. In the immediate, however, WowAce's content will be available via the new Curse Client that is in development. The new client will be a great departure from the current one, and I'm glad to say I'm in a position to influence its future development, and I will continue to use this influence to push for the features that you, the community, want to see.

As far as the timing of what I've outlined here, it's not going to be immediate. I'm looking at rolling out the new site towards the middle of August. I'll, of course, be announcing the exact date once we get a little bit closer to the big day.
