Language issues
#1
As many of you are aware, we had a situation last week wherein Galven was forced to leave the guild. He has fortunately been able to return, but this situation could have gone a lot worse. I'm going to start at the start for those who do not know the details: Galven's mother (IRL) happened to see one of us using extremely inappropriate language in guildchat. She told Galven that he would either have to stop associating with us or give up WoW altogether. Galven chose the former, and let us know. I was extremely upset about this: it is not fair that one of our members should lose Ironsong because of the actions of another. We have plenty of young people in the guild; this situation could easily happen again if we let it. Therefore, understand that myself, our Blademasters, Farseers, and Advisors will be instituting a zero-tolerance policy for foul language and inappropriate subject matter in guildchat and public teamspeak channels. We are extremely serious about this: transgress and you will be removed from the guild. Thanks for everyone's understanding!

Not to be a jerk about it, however could you define 'foul language' ? (This probably sounds even sillier since I can't play WoW right now, but soon...)

For example, are the following words considering unacceptable ? Damn, crap, penis ? For a few examples, what about things like WTF, SOL. I'm honestly not trying to nitpick however I feel this is a case (similar to pornography) where what exactly is not allowed needs to be clearly defined for all involved.

Two things to your comment, Althos.
1 - As Sreng put it "if it can't pass a PG rating, don't say it"
2 - If you have to ask if it can be said in guild chat, find some other way to say the same thing.

Euphemisms FTW.

Freak, crap, screw, etc. Although I myself would like an explicit list. "Damn" and "Hell" are vulgar when used in the derogatory sense, but does anyone still get offended by them?

I have grown to like the term "eff". I hope no one dislikes that. Whoever does is a effing jerk. JK Wink

Guh. I can't say "sexcellent" in guild chat, can I? Weak. >.<

(( eep. I'm going to have to duct tape poEdo's fingers together. Many things he types are completely fine to him, but he is also a sailor... <pulls out the knuckle-thwapper> ))

((I've never seen him say anything offensive, personally.))

(( hehe, mostly happens when something jumps out and 'scares' us (unexpected 20million adds, boss mob drops only to find out that he respawns as a lich, etc etc) ))

It's easy to cuss out loud when startled. It's far more difficult to reactively write something vulgar in response to a similar situation. Smile

Awww, bye-bye occasional cursing. Pity too, I find some words can really flavor up speech. Why must we, as an American culture, insist that these words be taken offensive when not used to attack someone else? Shame on you, society! Shame on you!

I will try my best to submit. But be fore-warned: too much OOC chatter will have me garnishing my speech with such wordage.
It has been a while, my friends. Time to come back in time.

::chuckles at Haida::

In fact this is already in the Terms of Service or some such for the game, it's just oft-ignored.

I like to use the colourful words from favourite science-fiction shows like Frell and Frack.

Razzlixx Blingwell - Warlock

(( I tend to flavor my language with strange words I've picked up over the years of RPing....you will even, on occassion hear me use the word "vith" ... 1 gold to whomever can tell me where that's from (Without having to look it up!) ))

There are many possiblities for "VITH"

It could be the 6th century (Roman Numerals VIth)
It could be a hotel in Belgium St. Vith.

So those are my two guesses

(( both wrong Wink Good guesses, though...however, "Vith" is a curse. ))

(( *grins* having used it myself in everquest, I can tell you. It's a certain curse word that starts with the letter F used in drow language and adopted by many dark elves, including myself, as well as many other parts of drow language. ))
