For the Californians

The President here where I work happens to be a lawyer as well, so he's always forwarding the Directors with new laws. This came down the pipe today, figured I'd pass it along.

Quote:A couple of big ones...Pay attention!
New California Laws effective 7/1/07
New Driving Fines for 2007

1. Carpool lane - 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/07 (The $271 posted
on the highway is old). Don't do it again because 2nd time is going to be
double. 3rd time triple, and 4th time license suspended.

2. Incorrect lane change - $380. Don't cross the lane on solid lines or intersections.

3. Block intersection - $485

4. Driving on the shoulder - $450

5. As of 07/01/07 cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving.
Ticket is $285. They will be looking for this like crazy -easy money for police department.

6. Cell phone use in the construction zone. - Double fine as of 07/01/07.
Cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving.

7. Speeders can only drive 3 miles an hour above the limit...This is kinda lame, but they say you used to get away with 5 miles an hour above the limit.

8. DUI = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)

9. Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts - both passengers and drivers get tickets .

We already had those harsh take no crap laws here for DUIs. They always say here, expect the max. Our Sheriff have a place thats called "Tent City" and all of the DUI and law breakers go to. It is a horrid place, they make all the people there wear pink and they get like a bologna sandwiche and milk for lunch or something like that, heh. I love this jail system, because my tax dollars don't go towards their Magazine subscriptions, cable TV, Internet, Spas, and what ever else the other jails and prisons give their inmates. Cali needs to have it this harsh. They just don't get out Arizona 115 heat.

Speaking from personal experience, California jails do NOT have any of those and are not even remotely as cushy as some political pundits make them sound.

Most of those laws are already in effect in the mid-Atlantic region states. The fines are about what I would come to expect, except that carpool lane one... that's pretty crazy. But the seat belts, DUI (being sent to jail at least for the night), and cell phone stuff is all there.

And the speed limit... ummm, you can always be pulled over for breaking the speed limit. It's a limit, not a suggestion. The only reason there is any leeway given that close to it is because of the margin of error in the speedometer and radar. It's reasonable to fight it if you're that close, so they don't bother. Always cracks me up when someone says they didn't even realize they could get a ticket for only going 5 MPH over the speed limit.

I heard about this when it first came about. Supposedly the tents were suplus from Desert Storm (if memory serves me right, no guarentees), and something was said along the lines of "if it was good enough for soldiers fighting for the country . . . ." I applauded, wholeheartedly.

This is an urban legend that started circulating around the beginning of the year. See http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl...s_2007.htm for the debunking analysis.
