Changing profession specialities
#1
Hi all,

I trained Zlinka to be a master Axesmith. This was useful because I could craft very nice axes for people who could wield such heavy weapons.

With the release of the Burning Crusade, however, profession specialities have changed. Now your speciality only lets you craft BoP items for yourself. So Master Axesmithing does nothing for Zlinka now, because it only lets her forge items she could not equip. All of the old speciality recipes I could craft for other people -- like the Arcanite Reaper, the Nightfall -- became general recipes, available to all blacksmiths.

With this in mind, Zlinka took the plunge and switched to Master Swordsmithing this morning. This way she can make weapons she can equip, in addition to all the fine axes she already knew how to make.

For those who are also contemplating a speciality switch, know that it is painless for someone just venturing into TBC profession content. I did it this morning.

Here's what happens when you switch specialities:

* You do not lose any profession skill points

* You do not lose any of the old pre-TBC speciality plans. These have become general plans. I still have the Nightfall and the Arcanite Reaper plans from being a Master Axesmith even though I am now a Master Swordsmith.

* You do not have to do any quests to learn the new speciality.

* If, however, you have already learned some of the new Burning Crusade BoP profession speciality plans, you will lose those plans when you re-spec. You will also lose the ability to equip those items if you have already crafted them.

Here's how to switch:

* Talk to the master profession trainer of your current profession. For blacksmiths, talk to the armorsmith in Orgrimmar, or the Hammersmith-Macesmith-Axesmiths in Everlook. Pay 50 gold to unlearn your speciality. This is the only cost to changing speciality.

* Talk to blacksmith of your choice (see above) to learn the speciality of your choice. It's instantaneous and costs no money to learn the other speciality.

A final note...

With the release of TBC, the old profession speciality tags were erased, so you can learn the recipes of the other specialities now. This goes for faction-reward recipes too. So, as I was exalted with Thorium Brotherhood, I can now craft all the exalted blacksmithing plans -- the swordsmith, macesmith, and armorsmith plans in addition to my original axesmith reward. So it's worth it to check with your former factions to see if you can craft recipes from other specialities now.

Edited to add information about losing the ability to equip TBC BoP items after a re-spec.

I may decide to do this with Krigaren once I finish making him a Bulwark of Ancient Kings. Unless there are compelling reasons to keep Armorsmith beyond that and the Aldor/Scryer rewards, I'll keep it, but if now I'll switch to Swordsmith or something.

I think you need to maintain the profession speciality in order to equip the craftable BoP items. So if you re-spec to swordsmith you couldn't equip a piece of BoP armor you made as an armorsmith.

Well if what you say is true, unless the BoP says "Requires Armorsmith 375" or something, then it should be fine. The BoP is just to keep you from making a bunch of them and giving them away or selling them so they aren't "special" anymore or something.

The Devs are dumb. Yes.

Yes, it does require you to -BE- an Armorsmith to use the item.

Yep. You need to have the speciality in order to equip the item. Here's a thread on the profession beta forums about it. The especially relevant posts are #6 and #7.
